Our BioRecyGas technology was validated
at the Zabalgarbi incinerator

Bromalgae had tested its technology at the laboratory scale, making significant advancements in recent years, verifying the feasibility of its growth in larger volumes, under different conditions of light intensity, type, and periods, as well as with different carbon and nitrogen sources.

After conducting various proof-of-concept tests in collaboration with the enzymatic and cellular technology research group at the University of the Basque Country, the technology was scaled up to the pilot stage. During this stage, the CO2 and NOX abatement test was conducted in an industrial setting, specifically at a waste incineration plant called ‘Zabalgarbi’. The results of this study proved promising, showing the viability of microalgae growth with residual industrial gas effluent.

Our first pilot plant in
in Barakaldo (Bizkaia)

In June 2023 we inaugurated our first microalgae liquid vegetation system, GarbiAir, in Barakaldo.


This first pilot plant will help us to further improve its design and will allow us to continue investigating the capture of CO2 and NO2 from microalgae. 

Our second pilot plant in Bayonne (France)

In September 2022, a partnership was launched with the municipality of Bayonne (France) and the Communauté d’Agglomération Pays Basque to test our innovative solution for capturing urban pollutant emissions, GarbiAir, under real conditions. This installation in Bayonne will allow us to validate the scientific principles of our system.

This first experiment will last between two and three months.

It is funded by the Basque Government through its economic development agency SPRI and by the Communauté d’Agglomération Pays Basque.

In Bromalgae we are excited to announce an innovative collaboration with ENERparking to integrate their solar rooftop projects with our advanced photobioreactors.

This revolutionary alliance combines ENERparking‘s expertise in clean energy generation with Bromalgae’s ability to purify air, offering a global solution to improve the quality of life in urban areas.

Combined benefits of ENERparking and Bromalgae:

  1. Clean Energy: solar rooftops capture sunlight and turn it into electrical energy without CO2 emissions, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  2. Air Purification: Photobioreactors capture and transform atmospheric pollutants such as CO2 and NO2, improving air quality in urban areas.
  3. Integrated Efficiency: The combination of solar energy and air purification creates an integrated solution that maximises the use of urban spaces, benefiting both the environment and public health.

Pilot project at the Artxanda Tunnels Toll

BROMALGAE participates in the Bizkaia Environmental Corridor project, in which a demonstration area of the Road Infrastructures, provided by Interbiak Bizkaia, will be used for the development of the project.

With the GarbiAir system, the project addresses a critical air pollution problem in areas of high vehicle density, such as toll areas. The project will allow:

  • study the level of pollution in toll zones and establish relationships with peak hours and traffic density.
  • reduce the concentration of CO2 and NO2 in the air, improving air quality in toll zones.
  • demonstrate and validate the effectiveness of an innovative technological solution that can be replicated in other road infrastructures.
  • promoting the adoption of green technologies in transport infrastructure management.
